The story of Quo Vadis
Tradition tells that St. Peter was fleeing Rome under the shadow of Nero’s persecution. The danger was real. Perhaps Peter was torn—between the call to lead and the instinct to survive.
Then, along the Appian Way, he saw a familiar figure approaching. It was Jesus. Startled, Peter asked, “Quo vadis, Domine?” — “Where are you going, Lord?” Jesus replied, “I am going to Rome to be crucified,” and disappeared.
In that moment, grace broke through. Peter’s heart was pierced with conviction. He turned around, retracing his steps—not toward safety, but toward sacrifice. Back to Rome. Back to his cross. Back to suffer and die with his flock, laying down his life in union with the crucified Christ.
